Historical Events for 3rd March, 1878 » The Russo-Turkish War (1877–78) or Russo-Turkish War ends as Bulgaria regains its independence from Ottoman Empire according to the Treaty of San Stefano; shortly after Congress of Berlin stripped its status to an autonomous state of the Ottoman Empire. It provided for a new disposition of the European provinces of the Ottoman Empire that would have ended any effective. Unfortunately, it does not lead to the liberation of all Bulgarian lands - some of them remain under Ottoman rule, others fall within the borders of our neighboring countries. Article VI of the treaty established the Principality of Bulgaria, returning the name Bulgaria to the list of European states. The date signifies the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878 Jul 20, 1998 ยท Treaty of San Stefano, (March 3 [February 19, Old Style], 1878), peace settlement imposed on the Ottoman government by Russia at the conclusion of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78.
